ACCA FIA vs ICAEW CFAB After SPM: Which Starting Route Fits You?
Compare entry, subjects, assessment, costs and professional progression, including current CFAB exams and ACCA’s 2027 transition.
ACCA Foundations in Accountancy (FIA) and the ICAEW Certificate in Finance, Accounting and Business (CFAB) are starting options to explore after SPM. FIA is a group of ACCA qualifications; CFAB is a named ICAEW certificate. Your choice should reflect the award you want first, how you learn and the professional pathway you may pursue later.

| Changes to check | Announced 2027 qualification transition | Current Next Generation syllabus and any credit for earlier passes |
Neither starting route alone gives full professional membership. A college’s admission or scholarship criteria may be stricter than the body’s registration requirements.
Check your SPM results with the provider
Both bodies offer accessible starting qualifications, but ask the college to assess your actual SPM results. Confirm its English, Mathematics and other subject conditions, whether support classes are needed and whether the quoted package assumes prior accounting knowledge.
For FIA, ask exactly which subjects you start with and which award the package targets. For CFAB, confirm that the timetable and materials match the current syllabus. Obtain separate written decisions on admission and any scholarship so you understand which conditions apply to each.

Compare subjects and awards
Under the current FIA structure, the ACCA Diploma in Accounting and Business (RQF Level 4) requires Business and Technology (FBT), Financial Accounting (FFA), Management Accounting (FMA) and Foundations in Professionalism. Other FIA starting awards involve different exams. Completing that diploma is not the same as completing CAT, which has additional requirements.
The current CFAB modules are Accounting Fundamentals, Assurance and Risk Fundamentals, Business Insight and Performance, Business Law, Sustainability and Ethics, and Tax Fundamentals. CFAB is also a stand-alone award. Ask what certificate and transcript you will receive, including the position if you pause before completing all requirements.
Do not choose only by counting “three papers” against “six papers”. The starting level, syllabus coverage and award requirements differ. Neither is automatically an academic diploma or a guaranteed university transfer route.
Check the qualification version for your intake
ACCA has announced a replacement for the current FIA suite through redesigned Foundations and Knowledge levels. Its published guidance gives mid-July 2027 deadlines for current FIA diploma exams and Foundations in Professionalism, with exact dates still to be confirmed. Transition credit depends on completed elements; the guidance also explains the K3 Business Law progression requirement for students targeting the current RQF Level 4 diploma.
Before enrolling across that change, ask the provider to show your expected exam passes in ACCA’s official transition guidance and tool. Include a scenario where a retake changes your schedule.
For ICAEW, the former CFAB exams were withdrawn on 31 March 2026. New students should use Next Generation CFAB materials. Existing students with earlier passes need the official mapping; the treatment of Business Technology and Finance and Sustainability and Ethics depends on registration history. Check ICAEW’s transition arrangements rather than relying on an older brochure.
Compare assessment and study support
Both routes require preparation for the professional body’s assessments. Request current sample questions, a weekly timetable and a breakdown of teaching, independent practice and revision. Do not assume a college’s internal tests replace the body’s exams.
CFAB exam formats vary by module. For example, ICAEW’s current Accounting Fundamentals exam combines short-form and scenario-based questions. Ask for practice using the relevant exam software, feedback on mistakes and a clear plan for resits.
Compare tutor access, class size, revision support and the policy when an exam is failed. Ask about attempt limits and progression restrictions before enrolling. The better fit is the route whose workload and support you can sustain, rather than the one presented as universally easier.
Understand the route beyond the starting award
Current FIA progression can lead into the ACCA Qualification with Applied Knowledge exemptions after the relevant award. Further exams and the applicable ethics and practical experience requirements remain. For a course spanning 2027, use the published transition rules to establish the next stage.
CFAB covers ACA’s first level, but CFAB completion does not confer ICAEW membership. To qualify through ACA, you need the remaining requirements, including an ACA training agreement with an authorised training employer. Ask how the college helps students prepare for recruitment, and distinguish interview support from a guaranteed training position.
Compare the later pathways in ACCA vs ICAEW in Malaysia. The decision about a starting certificate should include a realistic view of the training and study required afterwards.
Compare costs to the same endpoint
Request an itemised quote for the starting award, followed by a separate estimate for the next professional stage. Include college tuition, body registration, subscriptions where applicable, exam attempts, materials, resits, transport and accommodation.
Check the currency of each charge, what the scholarship covers and whether fees increase if study takes longer. Ask about withdrawal terms, scholarship repayment conditions and whether revision classes cost extra. Compare a realistic schedule with a retake allowance alongside the advertised fastest route.
Do not treat a shorter starting course as proof that the full professional qualification will be cheaper or quicker.
Keep degree and alternative options open
If you may later want a degree, ask the receiving university to assess the exact award. Get written confirmation of admission conditions, entry year, credit and remaining study duration. Recognition of a qualification does not automatically establish a particular university’s transfer policy.
Also ask what happens if you change professional body or pause your studies. Keep official exam records and check any proposed exemptions directly with the receiving body. Do not assume similar subject names mean a one-for-one transfer.

Choose using a written pathway plan
Explore FIA if you are interested in ACCA and understand the exact award and transition plan for your intake. Explore CFAB if its subjects appeal to you and you want to investigate the ACA route, including its later training agreement.
Before paying, collect the provider’s admission decision, current syllabus, assessment rules, full fee schedule and progression map. Compare these side by side with your family. There is no universal winner: the useful choice is the one you can explain from your starting point through the next award and professional stage.

Frequently asked questions
Can I study FIA or CFAB after SPM?
Both are starting options to explore after SPM. ACCA sets no academic entry minimum for current FIA, and ICAEW sets no formal academic minimum for CFAB. Tuition providers may have their own admission and scholarship conditions.
Is FIA one qualification?
FIA is a group of ACCA qualifications. Ask which award your package targets and which exams and modules it requires, including how ACCA’s announced 2027 transition affects you.
Does CFAB make me an ICAEW Chartered Accountant?
No. CFAB is a stand-alone certificate and a possible starting point towards ACA. Full qualification requires the remaining ACA requirements, including an authorised training agreement.
Which is easier or cheaper?
There is no universal answer. Compare current syllabuses, assessment formats, support and itemised costs to the same endpoint, with a realistic allowance for retakes.
Which CFAB syllabus should a new student use?
New students should use Next Generation CFAB materials. Former CFAB exams were withdrawn on 31 March 2026. Existing students should check ICAEW’s transition mapping for their registration date and earlier passes.
