Quick answer

After SPM, you can begin with a Diploma in Accounting, take a foundation or other pre-university qualification before a degree, or start an ACCA Foundations pathway. The right choice depends on whether you want an earlier employable qualification, broader university flexibility, or a direct professional-accountancy route.

After SPM, you can begin with a Diploma in Accounting, take a foundation or other pre-university qualification before a degree, or start an ACCA Foundations pathway. The right choice depends on whether you want an earlier employable qualification, broader university flexibility, or a direct professional-accountancy route.

1. The four main routes at a glance

Route after SPMWhat comes nextMain advantageMain check
Diploma in AccountingEmployment or progression to a relevant degreeApplied learning and a recognised exit qualificationMQA accreditation, credit transfer and total time to degree
Foundation, STPM, Matriculation or A-LevelBachelor of Accounting or a related degreeBroader degree and university optionsRequired subjects, grades and acceptance by target universities
ACCA Foundations in AccountancyProgression through the ACCA pathwayDirect professional-accountancy focusProvider support, exam costs and long-term commitment to the professional route
Accounting degreeGraduate employment, professional papers or further studyBroad university education and career flexibilityExact programme accreditation, professional recognition and exemptions

These routes are not interchangeable. Compare the qualification awarded at each stage, not only the course name used in advertising.

2. Route 1: Diploma in Accounting

A diploma can suit students who prefer applied learning, want a recognised qualification before committing to a degree, or do not yet meet a degree pathway requirement. Common subjects include financial accounting, management accounting, taxation, auditing, economics, business law and information systems.

Before enrolling, verify the exact diploma in the Malaysian Qualifications Register and ask target universities for a written credit-transfer assessment. A diploma may shorten a related degree, but advanced standing is not automatic and can differ by institution, intake and module match.

  • Exact programme and campus appear in the MQR
  • Entry requirements match your SPM subjects and grades
  • Total tuition and living cost are clear
  • Internship or practical training is explained
  • Degree progression and maximum credit transfer are confirmed in writing
  • Professional exemptions, if advertised, are checked with the professional body

3. Route 2: Foundation or another pre-university qualification

Foundation, STPM, Matriculation and A-Level are preparation routes rather than professional accounting qualifications. They can be a strong choice when you intend to complete a bachelor’s degree and want to preserve options across accounting, finance, economics, business analytics or related fields.

Foundation is often linked closely to the offering institution. STPM and A-Level can offer wider portability, while Matriculation follows its own application and progression rules. The best route depends on your target universities, subject strengths, budget and preferred assessment style.

Work backwards from the degree

Check the accounting degree’s published requirements before selecting your pre-university subjects. General admission to a university does not guarantee admission to every accounting programme.

Use our Foundation vs STPM vs A-Level comparison to examine duration, cost, recognition and flexibility.

4. Route 3: ACCA Foundations in Accountancy

ACCA states that its Foundations in Accountancy qualifications have no minimum academic entry requirement. This opens a professional-accountancy pathway to students who are not yet eligible to register directly for the ACCA Qualification.

The foundation route is focused on accounting and finance from the beginning. It may suit students who are confident about pursuing professional accountancy and who are comfortable with external examinations and independent study.

  • Check the starting level. Do not assume every student should begin with the same paper or award.
  • Budget for the full pathway. Include registration, annual subscription, tuition, examinations, possible resits and learning materials.
  • Assess teaching support. Compare class schedules, lecturer access, revision support and exam administration.
  • Understand progression. Ask the provider to map every stage from your first paper to ACCA membership.
  • Keep alternatives visible. Check how the qualification would be treated if you later decide to enter a diploma or degree.

5. Can you enter ACCA directly after SPM?

Do not assume that SPM alone provides direct entry to the ACCA Qualification. ACCA’s published minimum route is based on qualifications equivalent to two A-Levels and three GCSEs in five separate subjects including English and Mathematics. Its Malaysia entrance database lists specific Malaysian qualifications that are sufficient for registration.

If you do not meet the direct-entry requirement, the Foundations in Accountancy route may provide a starting point. Confirm your own eligibility through ACCA’s current entrance-requirements database before paying tuition or registration fees.

Provider admission is not the same as ACCA registration

Ask which ACCA award you will be registered for and obtain the official pathway in writing. A college’s internal entry decision does not replace ACCA’s registration assessment.

6. Route 4: Bachelor of Accounting

A bachelor’s degree normally follows STPM, Matriculation, Foundation, A-Level, diploma or another accepted equivalent qualification. It provides a broader academic experience through accounting, business, law, technology, analytics, governance and elective subjects.

A degree may suit students who want campus life, internships, broader graduate opportunities and the option to pursue professional qualifications later. It can also preserve flexibility for careers in corporate finance, banking, consulting, analytics, compliance and management.

Check the exact programme rather than relying on the university’s overall reputation. Search the Malaysian Qualifications Register using the qualification title and delivery location, then verify any separate professional recognition claimed by the institution.

7. Accounting degree versus ACCA

FactorAccounting degreeACCA pathway
Primary focusUniversity qualification with broader academic and elective contentProfessional accountancy examinations, ethics and practical experience
AssessmentInstitution-specific mix of exams, assignments and projectsExternal ACCA assessments with specified progression requirements
Student experienceCampus, clubs, electives, internships and university supportProvider-dependent classes with a more specialised professional focus
Career flexibilityBroad graduate roles and postgraduate optionsStrong alignment with accounting, audit, tax and finance roles
Professional progressionMay provide exemptions, depending on the exact programme and modulesRequires completion of the remaining examinations, ethics module and practical experience for membership

This is not always an either-or decision. Some students complete an accounting degree and then claim eligible ACCA exemptions. Others start with a professional pathway and later add an academic qualification. Compare time, cost, exemptions and the qualification you will hold if your plan changes.

8. Check ACCA exemptions properly

ACCA states that exemptions can be awarded for up to nine Applied Knowledge and Applied Skills exams, but no exemptions are awarded for Strategic Professional exams. The actual award depends on the qualification, institution, modules studied and relevant assessment dates.

  1. Use the official exemption calculator. Select the awarding institution, programme and graduation period.
  2. Compare exact modules. Similar programme titles do not guarantee identical exemptions.
  3. Check conditions. Some exemptions depend on completing and passing specified modules.
  4. Include exemption fees. An exemption can reduce exams while still carrying a charge.
  5. Wait for confirmation. Do not rely solely on a brochure or verbal estimate before committing to a study plan.

ACCA advises students to wait until exemptions are confirmed before committing to study arrangements based on the expected award.

9. Understand professional recognition in Malaysia

The Malaysian Institute of Accountants is the statutory body regulating the accountancy profession in Malaysia and awards the Chartered Accountant Malaysia designation, C.A.(M). Completing an accounting course does not automatically give a graduate that designation.

If your long-term goal is public practice or the Chartered Accountant designation, work backwards from MIA’s current membership rules. Check whether the academic or professional qualification is recognised, what relevant practical experience is required, and whether additional examinations or conditions apply.

“Accountant” and “Chartered Accountant” are not casual marketing terms

Ask the institution to identify the exact recognised qualification or professional route supporting any claim about chartered status.

10. Compare entry requirements carefully

Entry requirements vary by institution, programme and intake. Common checks can include SPM credits, Mathematics, English, Principles of Accounting or other specified subjects. Meeting a published minimum does not guarantee admission to a competitive programme.

  • Use the current intake’s official entry requirements.
  • Check whether Mathematics or another subject is compulsory.
  • Confirm whether your English result meets the programme requirement.
  • Distinguish a pass, credit and specified minimum grade.
  • Check requirements for progression from foundation or diploma.
  • Use UPU e-Panduan for current public-institution programme conditions.
  • Ask private institutions to confirm requirements in writing.

11. Calculate the full cost and time

Tuition + registration and exam fees + subscriptions + learning materials + living costs + possible resits − confirmed aid = estimated pathway cost

A one-year foundation followed by a degree, a diploma followed by a degree, and a professional route have different cost structures. Compare the time and cost to reach your intended destination—not just the price of the first semester.

For ACCA, include professional registration, annual subscription, examination and exemption fees where applicable. For diploma and degree routes, include compulsory institutional charges, accommodation, transport, devices and internship costs.

12. Which route may suit you?

You may prefer…If you…
Diploma in AccountingWant applied learning, an earlier exit qualification and possible degree progression
Foundation or pre-universityPlan to earn a degree and want to preserve wider university or subject choices
ACCA FoundationsAre already committed to professional accountancy and comfortable with external examinations
Accounting degreeWant a broader university experience, internships and graduate-career flexibility
Degree followed by ACCAWant both an academic qualification and professional progression, with verified exemptions

Your SPM results are only one factor. Also consider study habits, financial resilience, preferred assessment, career uncertainty and the value of holding an intermediate qualification.

13. Questions to ask before enrolling

  • What is the exact qualification name and awarding body?
  • Is this exact programme and campus listed in the MQR?
  • What qualification will I hold if I stop after one or two years?
  • Which universities accept this pathway, and how much credit is guaranteed?
  • Which professional exemptions apply to my intake and modules?
  • Can I verify those exemptions on the professional body’s website?
  • What are the full tuition, examination, subscription and resit costs?
  • What academic result must I maintain for progression or scholarships?
  • How are internships and practical experience supported?
  • Which claims will the institution confirm in writing?

Frequently asked questions

Which accounting course is best after SPM?

There is no universal best route. Diploma can provide an applied qualification, pre-university routes prepare you for a degree, and ACCA Foundations offers a more direct professional-accountancy pathway.

Can I start ACCA immediately after SPM?

Do not assume SPM alone qualifies you for direct ACCA registration. Check ACCA’s current entrance database. Students who do not meet direct entry may be able to begin through Foundations in Accountancy.

Is a Diploma in Accounting better than foundation?

A diploma provides an accounting qualification and may lead to employment or degree progression. Foundation is primarily preparation for a degree and may be faster, but its portability varies.

Do I need an accounting degree to become an accountant?

Career routes vary. Some roles accept diploma, degree or professional qualifications, but the Chartered Accountant Malaysia designation is regulated by MIA and has specific membership requirements.

Does an accounting degree give ACCA exemptions?

It may. The number depends on the exact institution, programme, modules and assessment period. Check ACCA’s official exemption calculator and wait for confirmation.

Can PTPTN cover accounting courses?

Potentially, for eligible students enrolled in approved local institutions and programmes. Check the current student, institution, programme and loan conditions before relying on PTPTN.
