Quick answer

Animation creates the impression of movement through sequences of images. Studying it involves storytelling, timing, observation and a production process with repeated revisions. Enjoying animated films is a starting interest; making even a short sequence helps you test whether you enjoy the work itself.

What will you study?

Compare 2D and 3D pathways. Storyboarding and animation timing differ from modelling, rigging, texturing, lighting and compositing. Some courses cover the whole production process; others emphasise particular roles. Ask what students produce individually and which specialist skills are taught in depth.

Read the module list and assessment briefs. A good comparison asks what you will make, how often you receive feedback and how your work develops over the programme. Software names alone do not explain the quality or depth of a course.

Study routes after SPM

Explore a relevant diploma or a pre-university route followed by a degree. Foundation, STPM and A-Level qualifications must meet the receiving degree’s entry requirements. Some programmes add a portfolio review or interview. Confirm subject, language and creative assessment conditions for your exact intake.

Diploma-to-degree exemptions are not automatic. Ask for a written credit-transfer assessment, remaining duration and total further-study cost. If your results do not meet a diploma’s requirements, investigate a recognised related certificate and confirm its progression arrangements.

Coursemic tip

Save the official page or written information you relied on, together with the date you checked it.

An official programme example

MMU’s Diploma in 3D Modelling and Animation lists an SPM/O-Level route with at least Grade C in three subjects, plus an interview or portfolio submission as required by MMU. Confirm the current intake’s requirements and assessment process directly. See the official programme page. This is an example to research, not a ranking or an admission guarantee.

Prepare a portfolio

Start with a bouncing-ball exercise, a short action sequence and a storyboard for a simple scene. Keep rough versions and explain what changed after feedback. A short, clear demonstration of movement can be more informative than a long reel of unfinished work. Follow each institution’s portfolio instructions.

Check the required number of pieces, file format, size limit and whether sketches or process work are requested. Include original work and identify collaborators and any external assets. Follow the institution’s rules for AI-assisted work and be ready to explain the decisions you made yourself.

Equipment and software costs

Ask about graphics hardware, memory, rendering facilities, drawing tablets and software access. Confirm whether students can use labs outside class hours and whether remote access is offered. Rendering time, storage and backup matter; seek the course’s written specifications before buying a workstation.

Ask whether educational licences expire after graduation and whether you can retain access to portfolio files. Avoid purchasing a complete kit before the institution confirms what is supplied or required.

Plan the complete study budget

Request a current quotation covering tuition, registration, compulsory fees, deposits and any applicable taxes. Add accommodation, transport, meals, software, equipment and project expenses. Check internship travel, exhibition costs and the cost of progressing to a degree if that is your plan.

This guide does not publish an unverified tuition estimate. Compare complete pathway quotations for the same intake, and check scholarship renewal conditions, refund terms and programme-specific PTPTN eligibility before paying.

Compare practical teaching

  • Request examples of recent student work at different study stages.
  • Ask about class size, individual feedback and access to specialist facilities.
  • Check how group work is assessed and how students record their own contribution.
  • Confirm internship duration, placement support and who secures the placement.
  • Ask how final projects become a portfolio suitable for the roles you want.

Career options

Potential starting roles include junior animator, 3D modeller, storyboard assistant and production assistant, depending on the portfolio. Rigging, lighting and compositing are separate specialisms. A showreel should identify your contribution and match the role you seek. A qualification does not guarantee work at a particular studio.

Review actual job descriptions and compare their requested skills with the course modules. Employers may consider practical work, internship experience and communication alongside the qualification. No programme guarantees a particular job title or salary.

Before accepting an offer

Check the exact qualification, institution and campus in the Malaysian Qualifications Register. If you cannot find the programme, ask the institution to explain its accreditation status and provide the reference. Confirm admission, progression, costs and refund conditions in writing.

Frequently asked questions

Can I study animation after SPM?

A relevant diploma or pre-university pathway can be a starting point. Entry conditions vary, and some programmes require a portfolio review or interview.

Must I have taken Art in SPM?

Requirements differ. Some institutions have portfolio-based conditions or alternatives. Ask admissions to assess your results rather than assuming a universal Art requirement.

Do I need an expensive laptop?

Get the programme’s written hardware requirements and confirm lab access first. Equipment needs differ between graphic design, animation and interactive multimedia projects.

Does a diploma automatically shorten a degree?

No. Credit transfer depends on the receiving institution and the programmes involved. Obtain the exemptions, remaining duration and fees in writing.
