Quick answer

PTPTN does not award one fixed amount to every student. Your category—maximum, 75% or 50%—and the annual ceiling for your institution and programme determine the potential loan amount.

PTPTN does not award one fixed amount to every student. Your category—maximum, 75% or 50%—and the annual ceiling for your institution and programme determine the potential loan amount.

1. Core eligibility rules

Applicants must meet PTPTN's citizenship, age, income, institution, course, remaining-duration and Simpan SSPN conditions. The published income ceiling is RM50,000 gross per month for parents or guardians after deducting RM250 for each dependant.

Course recognition and PTPTN registration are separate checks. An institution may offer an accredited course, but the course must also be listed for PTPTN funding.

2. How the percentage is determined

Loan categoryCurrent PTPTN criterion
MaximumStudent or guardian is recorded as a Sumbangan Tunai Rahmah (STR) recipient
75% of maximumHousehold income is RM8,000 or below and the household is not in STR data
50% of maximumHousehold income is above RM8,000 and the household is not in STR data

This percentage is applied to the relevant published ceiling. It is not necessarily the same as your tuition fee.

Private institution bachelor's—artsRM13,600RM10,200RM6,800

These are annual ceilings shown on PTPTN's official education-loan page. Health-science, medical, postgraduate, professional and part-time programmes have separate ceilings. Always check the exact row for your programme before budgeting.

4. Estimate your funding gap

Use this simple calculation:

Annual tuition and compulsory fees − expected PTPTN disbursement − confirmed scholarship or family contribution = estimated funding gap

Do not build your budget around the maximum category until your award is confirmed. Also allow for living costs, deposits, equipment, transport and any timing gap before the first disbursement.

5. What can affect continued payments

Approval does not guarantee every later semester payment. PTPTN states that subsequent disbursement depends on the student remaining active in the approved institution, programme and level, and generally achieving a previous-semester GPA of 2.0 or higher. Deferment, suspension or a GPA below 2.0 may interrupt a payment.

Frequently asked questions

Does household income above RM8,000 mean I am ineligible?

Not automatically. PTPTN currently places non-STR households above RM8,000 in the 50% category, subject to the overall RM50,000 adjusted gross-income ceiling and all other conditions.

Is the amount shown a yearly or total amount?

The main published table shows yearly loan ceilings. Your approved total depends on the eligible study period and your offer.

Will PTPTN always cover the full tuition fee?

No. The approved amount may be lower than tuition and does not necessarily cover all living expenses. Calculate the gap before enrolling.
