Accounting Degree vs Professional Qualification in Malaysia: Which Route Fits You?
Compare entry routes, assessment, costs, exemptions, practical training and options if you change direction.
An accounting degree is an academic award, while a professional qualification follows an accountancy body’s education and training requirements. Students can combine both routes, and some professional pathways depend on earlier academic study. Compare your starting point, learning preferences and intended outcome before deciding what to begin after SPM.

Compare the main differences
| Compare | Accounting degree route | Professional qualification route |
|---|---|---|
| Main outcome | A university academic award | A body’s qualification, with separate membership conditions |
| Starting point | Accepted pre-university qualification or relevant diploma | Depends on the body and stage; school-leaver starting awards are available in some routes |
| Assessment | Programme-specific mixture of exams, assignments and projects | Body-specific exams and other assessed or training requirements |
| Practical work | Placements and projects vary by programme | Relevant experience and supervision requirements vary by body |
| Combining routes | May support professional eligibility or exemptions | Academic credit or degree progression requires a separate assessment |
These are broad distinctions. Inspect the exact award, assessment rules and progression arrangements.
What can you start after SPM?
For a degree route, compare foundation, STPM, matriculation, A-Level or relevant diploma pathways accepted by your intended university. Confirm subjects, grades and language conditions. A diploma may provide another academic award along the way, but later credit transfer depends on the receiving degree.
Some professional starting qualifications can be explored after SPM, including appropriate ACCA foundation-level or CAT routes and ICAEW CFAB. CPA Australia and MICPA have different eligibility structures involving further academic preparation. Do not treat every professional body as a direct SPM-entry alternative.
Ask for an individual assessment of your actual results and a written map of every later stage. Read our professional accounting pathway overview for the four routes.

Compare how you will learn
A degree may include coursework, presentations, group assignments and examinations across several subjects. A professional route can place substantial weight on the body’s assessments, with tuition provided separately. Neither description applies identically to every provider: request sample assessments and current study materials.
Compare tutor access, feedback, revision support and how independent study is taught. Consider whether you prefer a semester structure or a professional study schedule, and how you handle repeated high-stakes assessments. Neither route is automatically easier.
Degree first, professional study later—or a combined plan
These choices are not always mutually exclusive. A suitable degree can provide academic preparation and may support professional exemptions. Some students begin eligible professional study alongside a degree. CPA Australia, for example, permits eligible candidates to begin its programme before degree completion, but requires the recognised degree before CPA status.
Check what a combined arrangement actually includes: tuition, professional registration, assessed subjects, exemptions and later requirements may be separate. Ask whether simultaneous study affects workload or scholarship conditions. Do not pay for overlapping study without understanding what credit will count.
Exemptions and recognition
Verify the exact degree and campus in the Malaysian Qualifications Register. Then check the professional body’s assessment for the award, subjects, results and relevant study years. Academic accreditation and professional exemptions are different checks.
For professional study followed by a degree, obtain the university’s written admission and credit decision. A statement about qualification level does not by itself establish a particular university’s credit transfer or postgraduate admission. Ask which exemptions require fees and which professional elements remain compulsory.
Practical training and membership
A university internship and a professional body’s experience requirement may overlap only where the rules are met. Ask about relevant duties, supervision, employer approval, records and sign-off. A placement does not automatically complete professional training.
ACCA’s current membership route includes ethics and relevant practical experience alongside exams. ICAEW’s ACA includes professional development and experience within its training arrangements. MICPA’s diploma route includes Professional and Advanced stages, with practical experience also required for membership. Check your chosen body’s rules rather than treating an exam-completion date as full qualification.
Compare total costs and time
Budget for all preparatory study, tuition, compulsory fees, equipment, living costs and transport. For professional progression, add registration, subscriptions, exam or exemption charges, materials and possible resits. If you choose a degree plus professional study, include both stages.
Ask what sponsorship covers and read any attempt limits, service bond or repayment conditions. Compare time through to your intended outcome, including practical experience, rather than only advertised classroom duration. Neither employer sponsorship nor a particular training job is guaranteed.
If you change direction
Ask the university about changing major, withdrawing, intermediate awards and transferring credits. Ask the professional body and provider what recognised awards or records you retain if you pause or leave before completing the full route. Do not assume partial professional study equals a degree or automatically converts into one.
Consider future jobs or further study that explicitly require an academic degree, as well as those that accept relevant professional qualifications. Obtain the receiving institution’s or employer’s requirements directly. A credible alternative plan should name the qualification, remaining study and likely additional costs.

Frequently asked questions
Do I need both a degree and a professional qualification?
It depends on the chosen professional body and your intended jobs or further study. Some routes require a recognised degree, while others offer different entry paths.
Is professional study always faster or cheaper?
No. Compare your starting point, exemptions, all fees, possible repeat attempts and the time needed for relevant experience.
Does an accounting degree automatically make me a professional member?
No. Membership eligibility and any exemptions must be checked against the selected professional body’s requirements.
Can I transfer between the routes?
Possibly, but admission, exemptions and credit transfer require assessment. Obtain written decisions before assuming a particular remaining duration or cost.
