Plan the academic route after SPM
Compare a suitable Diploma in Accounting with accepted pre-university routes leading to an accounting degree. Check subjects, grades, costs and progression at the institution. MICPA’s professional accreditation of the exact award is a separate check from university admission.
Use our Accounting after SPM guide to compare starting routes. Request written confirmation of the MICPA pathway attached to your shortlisted award; do not assume every accounting diploma or degree carries identical recognition.
Compare the professional entry points
| Background | Route to verify with MICPA |
|---|---|
| Accredited accounting diploma | Professional Stage, followed by Advanced Stage |
| Accredited accounting degree | Possible Professional Stage exemptions and Advanced Stage entry |
| Non-accounting degree | Assessment and the applicable Conversion Programme route |
| SPM | Further academic study before these professional entry points |
The Advanced Stage is also known as the MICPA x CA ANZ Qualifying Programme. Individual eligibility and exemptions require assessment.

The accounting diploma route
MICPA publishes a Professional Stage Examination route for holders of an accredited Diploma in Accounting. Its four modules cover auditing, business and company law, finance and financial management, and financial reporting. Completion leads towards the Advanced Stage.
Confirm the exact diploma, study period and current module requirements. An academic diploma offer is not the same as professional registration. Budget for both stages and relevant practical experience rather than only the initial diploma tuition.
Degree entry and conversion study
Graduates of accredited accounting degrees may be eligible for Professional Stage exemptions. Ask MICPA to assess your exact award, subjects and results. Selected undergraduates may have specific early-entry arrangements; do not assume they apply to every student or degree.
For non-accounting degree holders, MICPA identifies a Conversion Programme route towards the qualifying programme. Ask which additional study you need and what evidence is required. A course with accounting modules does not automatically establish exemption from an entire stage.
Professional study and membership
The qualifying programme is a collaboration between MICPA and CA ANZ. MICPA explains that it mirrors the CA ANZ programme with Malaysian taxation content. Confirm the current core subjects, electives and assessment requirements for your intake.
Programme completion is not the only membership requirement. MICPA’s published guidance includes three years of relevant practical experience with the applicable approved training arrangements. Membership applications and approval follow completion of the requirements; enrolment does not entitle you to professional letters.
Choose training carefully
Check employer approval, supervision, relevant duties and experience documentation before relying on a job for training. Ask MICPA which registration stream suits your situation and what happens if you change employers or supervisors.
Read any sponsorship offer carefully: covered subjects, repeat attempts, study leave, employment conditions and repayment obligations can differ. A tuition place is not a guaranteed job or sponsorship. Keep your training evidence up to date.
Budget for the complete pathway
Include earlier diploma or degree study, professional registration, annual fees, subject or exam charges, study materials, optional tuition and resits. Add living costs, transport and equipment. Ask for an itemised current quote showing what is included and what remains payable separately.
Compare the time needed for professional study with the experience requirement; a short study schedule is not a promise of full membership in the same period. Check academic credit transfer and professional exemptions separately so you do not underbudget.
