Can You Study Accounting Without Prinsip Perakaunan or Additional Mathematics?
Understand how SPM subjects affect accounting diploma, ACCA FIA and ICAEW CFAB entry, and how to prepare without a school accounting background.
Yes, there are accounting starting routes you can explore without taking Prinsip Perakaunan or Additional Mathematics at SPM. Neither subject is a universal requirement across all accounting pathways. Your eligibility still depends on the exact programme, provider and intake, especially the rules for Mathematics, English and your overall results.

Separate the four subjects
| SPM subject | What to check | How it helps you prepare |
|---|---|---|
| Prinsip Perakaunan | Whether the programme specifically requires it | Prior exposure to transactions, records and financial statements |
| Mathematics | The required grade and any permitted reinforcement route | Percentages, ratios, calculations and interpreting numerical information |
| Additional Mathematics | Whether it is required or accepted as an alternative subject | Additional practice with algebra and quantitative reasoning |
| English | The programme’s grade or language condition | Reading questions, understanding terminology and explaining answers |
Mathematics and Additional Mathematics are separate subjects. If an admissions page specifies Mathematics, ask how it treats your particular combination of results rather than assuming one subject automatically replaces the other.
Accounting diplomas: read the exact entry conditions
As one published example, Sunway College Kuala Lumpur’s Diploma in Accounting page lists a minimum of three SPM credits including Mathematics, plus an English pass. Its published conditions do not list Prinsip Perakaunan or Additional Mathematics as compulsory subjects. The page also mentions a reinforcement Mathematics subject for students with only a Mathematics pass; ask admissions how that provision applies to your results.
This is a specific programme example, not a national admission rule or confirmation for every Sunway campus. Compare the current requirements at the institution where you plan to study. Ask for a written assessment before paying an enrolment fee.

ACCA FIA: distinguish registration from college admission
ACCA’s current FIA registration guidance states that there are no academic entry requirements. FIA is a group of qualifications with different starting points. Not taking Prinsip Perakaunan or Additional Mathematics does not, by itself, rule out registration for current FIA.
A tuition provider may set its own entry conditions for a particular class or accelerated package. Ask which award you will work towards, whether introductory subjects are included and what English and numeracy support is available. ACCA also highlights the importance of competence in English and Mathematics for successful study.
Check our ACCA after SPM guide for the wider route, including the announced 2027 transition. Do not apply FIA’s registration policy to direct entry into every later ACCA stage.
ICAEW CFAB: check the provider’s package
ICAEW states that CFAB has no formal academic entry requirements. This makes it a starting qualification to investigate even if you did not take school accounting or Additional Mathematics.
Individual college programmes can have stricter admission conditions. For example, Sunway College Kuala Lumpur’s published CFAB programme lists a minimum of five SPM As including Mathematics and English, alongside an age requirement. That is the provider’s package requirement, not ICAEW’s universal registration threshold.
Ask whether the package includes additional subjects, study support or work-based learning. Completing CFAB is also different from completing the full ACA qualification. Our ICAEW CFAB pathway guide explains the later steps.
If you did not take Prinsip Perakaunan
Ask how the first term introduces accounting concepts to beginners. Request sample lessons covering the accounting equation, double-entry bookkeeping and basic financial statements. Check whether tutors explain unfamiliar terms rather than assuming everyone has studied accounting before.
Try a short introductory lesson and work through a few transactions yourself. Notice whether you enjoy keeping records consistent, investigating differences and explaining what the numbers mean. Prior school accounting can provide familiarity, but it does not replace regular practice at the next level.
Choose a manageable pace and ask about feedback on early exercises. If the advertised course is accelerated, find out what preparation students without accounting experience are expected to complete before classes begin.
If Mathematics or English is your concern
Show the college your actual grades and ask whether you qualify directly, need an approved reinforcement subject or should consider another recognised starting route. Obtain the conditions, assessment, extra cost and effect on study duration in writing. A Mathematics pass or failure should be assessed against the specific programme’s rules, rather than a general promise that accounting is open to everyone.
For preparation, practise percentages, ratios, fractions, rearranging simple formulas and checking calculator entries. For English, work on reading a short business scenario, identifying the question and explaining a calculation in sentences. Ask for a diagnostic exercise so you can target the areas that need practice.
Additional Mathematics is not a substitute for checking these requirements. Strong results in one subject do not automatically remove a separate language or admission condition.
Choose support that fits a beginner
Compare tutor consultation, class size, revision sessions and how quickly you receive feedback. Ask whether introductory support is included in tuition and what happens if you fall behind or fail an assessment.
For professional study, request current sample questions and practice with the relevant exam software. For a diploma, check the balance of coursework and exams. A route may be open to you academically while still requiring a pace or assessment style that you need time to prepare for.

Get entry, funding and progression confirmed separately
Collect three written answers: whether you meet admission requirements, whether you qualify for financial support and what you must achieve to progress. A scholarship can require stronger grades or specific subjects even when the course itself does not.
Likewise, later degree admission, professional progression and exemptions have their own conditions. Ask the receiving university or professional body to assess the exact award when planning that next step. Keep the award name, campus, intake and applicable syllabus with your records.

Frequently asked questions
Can I study accounting without Prinsip Perakaunan?
Yes, there are starting routes to explore without the subject. Check the exact programme’s entry conditions and whether its teaching supports beginners. Not taking school accounting does not automatically exclude you from every accounting pathway.
Is Additional Mathematics compulsory for accounting?
It is not a universal requirement across all starting routes. Check the exact programme and its Mathematics condition, including how it treats Additional Mathematics or alternative qualifications.
Can I enter an accounting diploma with only a Mathematics pass?
Some published programmes describe reinforcement arrangements, but they are provider-specific. Ask admissions to assess your results and confirm all conditions and extra requirements in writing.
Does no academic entry minimum mean a college must admit me to FIA or CFAB?
No. A professional body’s registration rules and a tuition provider’s package admission requirements are separate. The college may set its own subject, grade or other conditions.
Will not taking accounting at school affect my scholarship?
Scholarships have their own criteria. Check the grade calculation, required subjects and other conditions independently of course admission.
